It happens every year in minor league baseball. Guys walk away from the game. Sometimes it's to pursue a career elsewhere. Sometimes it's because they're in their mid to upper 30's and feel it's time to move on. Sometimes the game makes the decision for them. And, sometimes we just don't know why.
Dan Duffy, a top prospect in the Royals' system, walked away for unspecified reasons after being a non-roster invitee to spring training. He was slated to report to Northwest Arkansas and compete at the double A level following the spring.
As the Royals' top pitching prospect, this would have been quite a blow if Dan hadn't decided to return this past week. So, cue the intro music, gather the parade floats, and fill the seats of the Natural's stadium. It's Duffy time.
Likened to a left-handed version of Zack Greinke, Duffy has been in the system since 2007 when the Royals drafted him in the third round out of high school. In three years of pitching at consecutively higher levels, he's never recorded an ERA above 2.98, carries a career K/9 ratio of 10.46/9, and boasts a 19-10 record.
Two months away from pitching may have put a bit of rust on his arm, but a couple of starts should knock it right off. He's reporting to extended spring training and will likely resume his role as the expected Ace of the Natural's staff. That is, if Michael Montgomery doesn't have anything to say about it. Two top tier lefties bolstering the staff as a one-two punch? Not bad if you ask me.
Forget the intro music, it's time to play the sympathy violin for the rest of the league. It's good to have you back, Dan.
